PUMP-HEAT concept overview

Heat Pump (HP) as a smart electrical load

The power plant is able to pick up excess energy during high renewable energy production and use later on when it is required.

HP allows Combined Cycle (CC) to sell grid services also when the CC is off

The integration of thermal storage allows for a balancing of the grid thus untapping and expanding the flexibility of either new or retrofit power plants.

HP impacts on the Gas Turbine (GT) inlet air, reducing Pmin and augmenting Pmax as required

The controlled strategy of the project adapts a GT inlet conditioning system that doesn’t solely rely on seasonal temperature effects but considers the Combined Cycle flexibility as a whole.

HP produces useful heat for district heating network (DHN), displacing auxiliary boilers

Auxiliary boilers are substituted in our project and the Direct Heating Network (DHN) capacity is enlarged.

HP also increases the CC average annual efficiency

This means proportional reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants thanks to the reduction of critical operating phases such as ramping up-down.
